The critical need for prevention and for appropriately addressing the effects of childhood trauma and toxic stress in Athens has spurred community partners to join together to build awareness and take action as a trauma-informed community.
A diverse group of leaders from the Athens community is convening the Summit as part of a strategy to become a trauma-informed community. Our goal is for all institutions, public and private, to understand the impact of trauma and how best to respond, with the vision that all children and families will be safe in every sense.

“The future of any society depends on its ability to foster the healthy development of the next generation. Extensive research on the biology of stress now shows that healthy development can be derailed by excessive or prolonged activation of stress response systems in the body and brain. Such toxic stress can have damaging effects on learning, behavior, and health across the lifespan.”
